Scorching day at the Woodley Carnival

The sunny weather from the week continued into Saturday, perfect weather for a car show in the park as part of the Woodley Carnival. A few months ago, Bill from the H&B MC asked me if I was free to come along to the show and to maybe try and bring a few Volkswagens too. With a couple of weeks to go it was time to start calling in some favours and thats how we found ourselves on a sunny saturday with nine assorted Dubs.

Once we'd waited for the bouncy castle people to finish we gathered our groups, campers at the back, Golfs in the middle and a pair of Beetles flanking a 911 (big brother in law to the flat fours) A lone VW engined trike appeared and was squeezed on the front, by the end of the day he would be a member of LTV

A few flags and flyers we're put out as well as balloons, lots of balloons.

With a bacon roll dispatched and cakes brought back from town, we set off for a wander as the show opened to the public at midday.

First up was the funfair, the big kids went on the dodgems, the little ones on the teacups.

Next up we started our walk round the cars, we were one end under the trees, the rest of the show was stretched out along the foot of the mount. The show forming a natural bowl over looking the park. There were classics from all marques from Austin to Ford, Alvis to Ferrari.

With stomachs rumbling we headed for the sausage stand and the beer tent. suitably refreshed we headed back to the club stand for a rest.

With Kim and Lily off for a walk so Lily could nap, I headed round the rest of the cars and bikes. A long natter to the Speedway bike owners gave me a great insight into a sport I known very little about. With bikes from the 1920s, 60s & 70s on show.

I wandered back past the Alvis line with Tim and we chewed the fat with Rob, owner of a pair of Alvis. He allowed me to park my backside into both his 1930s and 1960s examples.

Back at base, Lily was awake and clambering round Pabs camper, keeping him busy and enjoying herself no end.

With time ticking by and icecreams eaten, it was time for the arena parade and the end of the show. Neil and his red Beetle were asked to enter the arena to parade and chat and I was asked to get snapping, the local paper reporters long gone. A long snake of shiny classics cruised in and round the ring and were interviewed.

The awards we also handed out, back on the show site I was able to get some winners photos for the paper and various club magazines. Best in show went to the tiny Fiat Topolino, Best bike to the 1920s Speedway machine and Best display to the nearby Basingstoke Classic Car Club. Smiles all round.

With awards handed out and the cars slowly filing home, we packed up the Camper, Beetle and 911 and headed out. A whole five minute long cruise back home from a sunny and fun filled day. The rest of the snaps can be found here.

Steve.
