Today was a day for daddy treats, following a trip to Waterfest on town on Saturday we spied an advert for the Ridgeway Run Commercial Historic Vehicle Rally. The chap on the stall said it was a good day out but if we wanted to save the pennies on the entrance to the main show we could always head over to Henley for the start of the run. As we pulled into the carpark at the station a 1960s Foden was behind us so we knew we were in the right place. There were due to be 60-70 old trucks, vans and buses meeting up to be waved off in groups for the cruise.
Spotted on the side of a Citroen H van, made me laugh.
I'm use to classic car shows with the odd commercial, but this was something else. Everything was massive, vast wheels and tyres, everything gleaming and shiny. The car side of shows may be happy with a ratty finish or patina, but for the commercial chaps its as if its just rolled out of the factory.
There was a good selection of buses too.
Most seemed to do without any form of cargo, preferring the uncluttered look. Some however loaded themselves up.
There were a few smaller van sized commercials including this unusual Lancia panel van.
Soon it was time for the off, engines fired up, smoke billowed out and with a whine of transmissions the cavalcade moved on in small groups, Lily and I decided to wave them on their way.
And with that they were all away. We decided to make the most of the sunshine and head down to The Thames to feed the ducks and grab a coffee.
And that was it, a lazy afternoon followed by the rest of the day seeing my dad finished the weekend off beautifully.
Steve.
