Really tiny Wally campout

I'll admit it right now. I dropped the ball on the Wally Camping this year. Normally in mid February or early March I'm on the phone to the campsite booking a big old pitch for ten groups. Manflu and coughs that lasted for weeks knocked me out and by the time I had got my act together they were full for the weekends we could do, all they had was three pitches in a group. Never one to give up I booked them and we trimmed right down to us, Kelly and family and her brother. As the week started the rain was lashing down and manflu had taken us down to just the two families, undeterred I loaded the Camper and headed off, Kim and Lily following in the Beetle. Kelly, Ian, Rupert and Ivy had arrived just before us and we trundled down the site to our pitches for the weekend.

Within an hour or so we were all pitched and relaxing in the chairs. Lily and Rupert set about playing between the awnings. Before cooking tea and pre bedtime walk round site. A couple of Splitscreens and a cool Portafold caravan towed by a Sunbeam Alpine the sights we saw.

After a few stories and a cuddle, Lily fell asleep in Kims arms and was whisked away to the R'n'R bed for bed. Rupert took a little longer!

Saturday dawned overcast and we rustled up bacon sarnies for breakfast and planned our day, soon though the sun broke through as we were getting ready. Another trip was made to the campsite tractor.

Our plan for the day was to do as little as possible and relax. A walk into town and look around the charity shops, followed by the farmers market and meat shopping for the BBQ and then a picnic in the grounds of the castle with an adventurous explore of the castle afterwards.

Back at camp via an ice cream our vacant pitched had been filled by the T4 for our friend Steve who'd joined us for the rest of the weekend. The kids played in the Beetle again and the adults sat and chatted and supped beer while the BBQ warmed up, before I unleashed my chef skills with the tongs.

Much fine quality meat was consumed and a little salad too. Then with kids in their PJs it was story time again. Within a few seconds of each other they fell asleep on us and transferred to their beds with no problems. Leaving us time to unwind and chew the fat.

Sunday started foggy but this soon burnt off to reveal blue skies and sunshine once more. A breakfast of sausage and bacon baps was eaten to give us the energy to pack everything away. By mid morning the Campers and cars were filled and decided to make the most of the day and head back to the Castle, another picnic was bought and we laid out under the trees to eat before venturing up the steps again.

After studying the maps we realised that we weren't actually in the Castle, just the grounds, so we crossed the bridge and hiked up the circular mound to the site of the original castle Keep.

With some tree climbing and exploring completed we aimed for the splash park near the river to cool off and get yet more ice creams.

Finally back at camp we packed the last few bits and said our goodbyes before cruising home. It was a very different Wally camp, but we loved it, Lily had someone her age to play with and we had more time to just natter and relax with such a small group. And we scored big time with the weather.
